Sherrifflats Road, Thankerton

A postcard showing Sherrifflats Road, Thankerton. The card was sent from the village on 23 August, 1911. The card was addressed to Nurse Dudley at the Nursing Home in Holland Road, Hove, and references a possible visit to an exhibition in Glasgow later that year – possibly the exhibition that took place in Kelvingrove.

Sherrifflats is an interesting place as a knoll was removed near the farm of the same name in 1878. A cist burial was found containing several cinerary urns and a food vessel. These items probably date back to 1700 BC (Early Bronze Age). At that time, the Minoan civilization in Ancient Crete was at its height.
