An old picture of Howburn Bridge, Carnwath

Video added on July 28, 2026

The Hamilton Advertiser of September 5th 1902 reported:
"The little Howburn Bridge, which is situated a few hundred yards eastward of Carnwath on the Peebles Road, is now undergoing the process of being slightly widened."
"Such little improvements are specially necessary in these modern and motoring days, when our country roads are the scene of much more rapid traffic than was the case, even in comparatively recent times."
Our postcard of the old bridge is postmarked 1904, although the photo was presumably taken pre 1902. Perhaps the two worthy gentlemen with shovels, were waiting to make road repairs, once the hay carts had passed.
