This is a picture of the Thankerton Toll. In the days before the railways, money was raised for road maintenance through levying tolls. This toll house is typical of its sort, having windows facing up and down the road to keep a check on road users. The tolls were usually placed at crossroads to increase the tolls received. This toll house probably predates Telford’s 1822 road, which passed in front of toll house though the toll house itself is from about 1790s.Â
